give thanks with a grateful heart

why is it we can be grateful when bad things happen to people around us? why can't we grateful whenever we achieve or get something, bad or good? even when we are happy, sometimes we forget to be grateful. what about when life's get tough?
these past 2 months I've received bad news about some people who are close to me regarding their health. most of them have to deal with cancer. the rest, the symptom of cancer. first time I heard these news, I was shocked. because I never thought it would happen to them. I was so sad. all I could do is praying for them and cheer them. these days, cancer is like flu. perhaps because of the unhealthy lifestyle people have. junk food, instant food & beverage, less rest time, stress, lack of laughter.
hearing the bad news is like a slap in my face to wake up & live healthy. so I've reduced the consumption of bottled beverage, instant noodles (this is the toughest part), sugar, and sleep with the right mount of time.
and the most important thing, it reminds me again to be grateful.
according to webster, the definition of grateful is:
1. a : appreciative of benefits received
b : expressing gratitude (the state of being grateful : thankfulness)
2. a : affording pleasure or contentment : pleasing
b : pleasing by reason of comfort supplied or discomfort alleviated

but I think, grateful is: being thankful for whatever happen in life, because it'll give me lessons which will enrich me as a person. it means not only when good things happen to me, but also bad things. when I look back, I can be grateful now for the bad things because it taught me to be a better person, not to do things that will hurt people who care about and love me. when that bad things happened, I couldn't understand why and I couldn't be grateful. but now, I can.

so when life gets tough, the choice is in your hand. do you want to look at it as a curse or be grateful and wait to see what's the lesson behind it.

my first encounter with Studio Ghibli was in 2004 when I saw Spirited Away in my mother's friend house. her daughter had it, and because of the lovely cover art, I borrowed it. after I watched it, I fell in love. Spirited Away's ghosts and strange creatures captivated me. I've never watched any animation like that before. the animation I've watched mostly came from Disney with that default animation tune & safe story. animation alone in Spirited Away was different with Disney. I loved the animation, the world, the wild characters, the story, the plot, everything! it's more daring than any animation I've ever enjoyed, so I was in awe. When I love something, I stalked. so I started to watch more Ghibli. and I fell in love even deeper. sure, I don't get all the messages, but nevertheless, I'm hooked. I didn't know what's Spirited Away about until recently. it was about children who works in bath house in Japan. see? not easily digested.

everytime I watch film from Ghibli, I want to be in that world with the characters. even when the situation got heat up because of the war. yup, war theme is often carried by Ghibli films. they don't picture the world as a lovely, safe place where you'll find obstacles that you later can conquer and you'll find your happy ending. sometimes, the ending is floating between happy and sad, and even sad. even though the stories are imagination, Ghibli wants to give a sense of reality to the audience.

I've been listening to K-Pop recently ( I don't care. Sue me!) I think 2ne1 is the coolest girlband in Korea. If other girlbands' style are sexy underneath the sweetness, they stick with sexy underneath the edginess, which makes them even hotter. I just watched their video titled I am the best. The title isn't because of my birthday. It's already passed, and unlike most people, I don't stop and contemplating about my life. To think about it, I don't do it in New Year's Eve either. I'm not the kind of people who make the resolutions in life. Doesn't mean I have no dream or goal.
Life offered me the most sour lemon. It's def not good. Heck, it's dripping on my wound. Yes, that painful. I thought i could forgive, get over it, and move on. But here I am, realized that I still can't. The pain still felt like the wound is just cut open, not a year old. Maybe if the lemon stop dripping, my wound wouldn't feel this bad. Maybe if I got the apologize. My best friend told me to talk. But it's complicated, and I'm afraid because of the immaturity and or misunderstanding, I'll hurt the ones that matter. Well, I guess I'll never know but just endure it.
Forgive and forget is not as easy as it sounds. Because life is more complicated than what people think. I'm not trying to make excuse. But it's just what I have to deal with. Sometimes you can communicate and smooth things out, sometimes you just have to hold back and wait. For whatever life will offer you next.

when i heard this song for the first time, i had this grim on my face. i wonder what Sinatra would say about love and marriage 2.0.
life makes me re-think about the concept of love. not just what happen to me, but to the people around me. disloyalty, violence, divorce, war and all other ugly stuff not really cheer me up.
i consider myself as a cynic. it's my way of preventing myself from getting hurt (even with this attitude, of course I got hurt anyway). but i look at my parents, i see genuine love. it's not always clear sky, of course. but they resolve it. they can make it work.

August 13th 2010, Friday
after all of the chaos, finally me and mom took off to Sin (IDR 357k). As soon we landed in Changi, we went to terminal 1, to find cheap airline ticket to Bangkok. Apparently, there wasn't any. It's SGD 168! So we went straight to Golden Mile, where there are buses to Bangkok. But there wasn't any direct bus to Bangkok. We have to take bus to Hatyai (read: Hapcai), then take another bus to Bangkok. 28 hrs in total! But it's cheap, only SGD 42. We took Sri Maju, bc it's a big company, and it's our first time to go to Bangkok by bus. After purchased the ticket, I changed clothes, deposit our bags to Sri Maju, and we stroll!! :)

they will hold a Young Festival, so they built big stage & there were performances.
2. ICE CREAM!! one thing i like from Singapore is the SGD 1 ice cream! i love any flavor :D

Meet a fellow Indonesian traveler. she's writing a book about fasting month in Southeast Asia. Arrived in Bangkok at 11.30 pm. Hallelujah! Found a clean, cheap room. THB 500 for double, + 1 person + THB 300. Exhausted.

August 15th 2010, Sunday
Chatucak Market!! Not as spectacular as I thought. And we pay tuk-tuks only THB 20! but we had to visit a gem store first. Strolling around. Bought 7 earrings for THB 100. But then I found 12 pair for THB 120. DAMMIT!
kinda regret didn't buy the belt in the gem store earlier, only THB 90 :(
So many people! Bought the coconut ice cream, they served it in the coconut for THB 25. So many interesting stuff: antiques, souvenirs, clothes, shoes, even books.

August 16th 2010, Monday
1. Looking for Indonesian Embassy because our friend needed information about transportation to Cambodia. The embassy is 20 minutes walking. Not surprising that embassy is LAMEEEEE!!!! busy???? are you effing kidding me? quotes from mom: "no wonder our labors overseas being harassed with this ignorance from the government".
2. Grand Palace aka Wat Prakaeo. You have to wear shirt and trousers, or you will have to stand in a long line to borrow & change your clothes.
Pissed wit the tuk2 driver. They keep taking us to the gem store. EFFFFFFFFFF
Tips: at first, you maybe thrilled to ride tuk-tuk, but once they know you're tourist, they will ask you to go to the gem store so they can have fuel bonus from the store. It's pretty annoying, especially when you're tired. Make sure from the beginning that there is no stop, or take taxi instead. And make sure that the meter on your taxi is on.

Conclusion: Bangkok is not the paradise of shopping anymore. We have better and cheaper things in Jakarta. But if shopping is not your main pleasure, Bangkok has many tourist attraction.

I've always wanted to learn to knit. I saw it in the movies & I think it's interesting. Two months ago I finally have a knitting mentor which is my good friend, Elsa. Man! It is difficult! As far as I know, there are three methods of knitting: knitting needle, crochet, and the easiest method; finger knitting. Even Elsa lost her patience teaching me the crochet method. I almost cried because I can't do it =(
I browsed about knit world and I was like: I want to make this and that. I guess I just have to learn harder. Wish me luck!
Oh yeah, here's my first handmade using finger knitting method. How I love the yarn. It's only one yarn with 3 colors in it. Isn't it beautiful? ;)

Reading these facts makes me "oh geez...i have the symptoms, and i'm a woman". But lately, i've become friends with depression. I enjoy his company. Normally, i'm imagining my bright future; job that i enjoy and love, my hubby, my family. Now, i have this two thoughts that dominate my mind: death and insanity. I want a quick death, no pain. But another thoughts beat it: i still believe in hell, and i don't wanna be its member ; my parents, they have enough pain and tears already. One thing i know, i have to get out of depression before i get in too deep and couldn't be saved anymore.

No one ever told me that life is gonna be this hard. Well, I know it's tough, difficult, and complex, but I thought I could handle it and I am well prepared for it. I never thought it would be this exhausting. I am such a fool. Storms have invaded my life lately, and those are the nasty ones. Too much heartaches and tears. Bible and people said God is love. But I don't feel loved right now. My friends said I should be thankful for life, my parents, my family, wonderful people around me, and so on. I know that. But I just can't. I'm tired. I'm fed up. They said I should be patient, it's always darker before dawn come. But I don't have the will, strength, and patience anymore. I thought about death. Suicide isn't the best way out because I'm thinking about my parents, and hell scares the shit out of me.
One of my best friend said: "you're problem is so much less complex than I have." He was such a pain in the ass, and he is now. Not everyone can stand him, but we get along so well. He tells me about his darkest deepest secret, so I can say I know him so well. He can read someone's character & so far, he's always right. I watch him change these years into someone better. So when I'm dealing with this shit in my life, we talk. He cheers me up and all, but somehow I reject it. I'm in doubt. I doubt about everything in my life now. So here I am now, depressed, dark and doubtful. I hope I'll recovery soon.

so, on july 31st - august 4th me and traveler chicks are on this trip to our friends' wedding. traveler chicks are me, martha and elsa. we're into traveling, backpacking or semi-backpacking. we're travelers, not tourists, because everytime we travel, we will look for the culture sites. shopping is not really in our list. the premiere trip was to cambodia & malaysia. it was actually for summer english that my christian organization, the navigators, held. we wandered sometimes without the team & we're okay with that. no boys, no problem.. hehe..well not really. anyway, since then we've been to several places together. actually after cambodia-malaysia trip, we've only been to this small town called madiun, in east java. and this time we went to 3 towns and 1 city. yup, in 5 days.

health is expensive

this is a photo of the rocks in my dad's kidney. creeepy!!
my dad is the healthiest person i know on earth.
he doesn't eat red meat, fish only.
he doesn't like noodles or any fat, veggies and fruits only.
he likes to walk. every spare time he had he used it for walk.
he is living a healthy life.
thats why i was surprised when the doctors told my family dad got rocks in his kidney
my dad had the same problem in the past. he had the same surgery 22 years ago.
but still, because he has this healthy lifestyle, i thought he wouldn't have to experience this again.
for the surgery, he had to stay in hospital for 5 weeks in the hospital and he's dealing with a long recovery.
my mom is doing a research about hospital overseas, oh gosh, it only proves how suck indonesian health care is.
so guys, don't trust indonesian hospital. it sucks!
